Description

Emerging on the eastern coast of the United States in the early 1970s, hip hop is a form of music emphasising rhythmic beat patterns and spoken delivery rather than harmonic melodies and sung vocals.

History

Emerged on the East Coast of the United States in the early 1970s. Much of its roots can be traced to Deejay, a form of Reggae that DJ Kool Herc hoped to emulate in Bronx.

Subsequent development

This style proved quickly popular in Harlem and Queens, and the adaptation of the format to Disco and Funk increased the genre’s appeal, taking over New York and Connecticut while expanding across the United States through the 1980s.

Eventually, hip hop reached the West Coast of the United States, and Gangsta Rap quickly gained popularity, seen as a reaction to the East Coast’s Hardcore Hip Hop.

G-Funk emerged, popularised by Dr. Dre, which contrasted with the predominant West Coast sound, and proliferated throughout the Midwestern and Southern states.

Hip Hop reached the mainstreams by the early 2000s, and was highly influential on other genres, birthing styles like Neo-Soul.

Southern Hip Hop became popular, a style where the sampling was replaced by the use of drum machines, particularly the Roland TR-808. Songs began to place higher importance on production and energy over lyrics, with lyricism diverting from conscious subjects towards more hedonistic themes.

This culminated in the late 2000s rise of Trap, which became one of the most popular Hip Hop subgenres by the mid 2010s. The production techniques of heavy bass and rapid hi-hats had a major influence on the sound of Pop throughout the 2010s.
