Child of: EDM

Description

EDM with percussion heavily influenced by Trap. Uses syncopated percussion, 808 samples, snaps, ‘HEY!’ shouts, and stuttered hi-hats.

History

Emerged in the 2010s, with 2012 being its pivotal year, with mass popularity emerging through releases such as “Harlem Shake”, YouTube channels focusing on the genre (Trap Nation) and integration into pop (Dark Horse, K-Pop).

Mainly sources its inspiration from Trap but also heavily influenced by EDM and UK Bass scenes such as Dubstep, Wonky and Grime.

Early, “classic” releases were characterised by a dark and minimalistic atmosphere, focus on sub-bass, many drop sections, flippant vocal samples and Dutch House influenced synths.

Throughout the years, trap evolved into a broader genre and quickly spawned various sub-styles, such as Twerk and Hard Trap. The influence of House subgenres led to the development of Festival Trap, Heaven Trap, whilst Future Bass led to soother styles such as Chillstep and Tropical House.
