History
EDM was pioneered in the 1970s by producers like Giorgio Moroder who replaced R&Band Soul elements with electronic sounds, thus creating Electro-Disco. This new music featured faster tempos, synthesisers, drum machines and metronomic rhythms.
The early 1980s saw the development of House, and the mid-1980s the rise of Techno. The decade saw EDM become the dominant form of Dance music and the rapid evolution of new genres. This process was catalysed by the mass availability of new instruments such as the Roland TR-808 drum machine, Roland TB-303 synth and MIDI standards.
By 1987, House had become mainstream, with DJs reaching celebrity status and a culture developing surrounding EDM.
The 1990s saw widespread popularity of EDM in Europe, spawning genres like Hardcore (EDM) and Trance. EDMs popularity has continued to grow substantially, with the music and associated culture becoming a global phenomenon.
