Description

A large umbrella genre often following the template of drum machine-led 4/4 rhythms with kick drums on each beat at around 115-135 BPM.

Tracks often utilise repetition, synthesised basslines, off-beat hi-hats, snares and claps.

Early history

Evolved from Disco in the early 1980s, with its birthplace being Chicago.

Originated in Chicago, where Roland TR-808 and Roland TB-303 synthesisers allowed the development of the styles of Chicago House and Acid House. The genre’s name is thought to stem from ‘The Warehouse’ nightclub where pioneer Frankie Knuckles performed.

The New York Garage House sound, which retained more Disco influences (use of piano and soulful sounds), also developed at a similar time, led by DJ Larry Levan at the ‘Paradise Garage’ nightclub.

1986 was the year House became mainstream, leading to the development of worldwide regional scenes and the ‘rave’ subculture.

The 1990s saw continued success, with crossover between other EDM genres (Tech House, Progressive House, Euro House), and in the 2000s/2010s, many distinct offshoots of Deep House and Electro House were highly popular.

House has a major influence on Pop, especially through Electropop and Festival Progressive House.
